Frequently asked questions
FAQ’s
Are Avision scanners network scanners?
Any scanner has the ability to scan to a network destination if it is connected to a PC on a network. Avision has dedicated network scanners in our product range with build in Android or PC processors that can connect directly to a network without the need to connect to a dedicated PC. In addition several PC’s can connect to an Avision MiBox device and utilise a shared scanner as a network scanner on wifi or ethernet.
Can the scanner read barcodes?
No scanner can read barcodes. This is a function of the software. Avision scanners comes with bundled software to facilitate barcode recognition. In order to efficiently utilise data captured through barcode recognition IMC, Distributors of Avision In Africa supply support services to optimise your processes.
Does the scanner produce searchable PDFs?
Documents scanned on Avision scanners can output images as PDF, JPEGs, TIFFs, PDFA, GIF, and more. Searchable PDFs are created through bundled software or firmware, dependent on the specific product – simply choose which you prefer.
Will the scanner work with my Mac?
All Avision scanners come with windows 10 and Mac drivers. Drivers can be downloaded from the resource page on our IMC, Distributors of Avision In Africa website: Downloads
Does the scanner work with Linux?
One would need to check www.sane-project.org to establish whether or not the relative driver is available, the majority of Avision scanners has linux drivers.
Can the scanner name my document with the invoice number?
If one is using barcodes on the originals the Avision software has the ability to name/index the image accordingly. Ideally this is a post-production function and one should investigate available options to do this indexing with various levels of automation depending on budget availability and complexity of index and data extraction required.
Can I scan a multi-page document of 200 pages or more as a single document?
The Avision sheetfed units have the facility to 'continue scanning' which enables one to keep adding originals to generate large multi-page images. The more pages you scan into a multi-page document, the larger the file size will be, which has the potential to create problems in other processes after scanning the document due to bandwidth constraints. IMC, Distributors of Avision In Africa supply technical services to provide best advice on your unique requirements.
Where do I put my scans so I can find them again?
Ideally one should install a Document Management Solution where images can be securely stored and properly structured. Once indexed, it is imperative to manage your electronic images in a purpose designed system for future access. Storing documents in a folder structure on your hard drive has several limitations and one should invest in a proper database driven Electronic Document Management Solution.
If I am in Johannesburg and Charles in Durban needs to have access to the scanned document, do I use Dropbox?
There are a number of options available from in-house shared folders on the company servers to cloud based DMS solutions providing restricted access to named users. Our scanners are compatible to be utilized on all these platforms.
Can I save my images on the scanner?
The scanner is what it says it is, a scanner, images are delivered to a PC or end solution and would be saved there. Scanners scan and create the image, which get saved on the desired platform.
Can I search my PDF?
Avision scanner’s bundled software has the ability to generate searchable PDFs although this does slow down the scan speed as you are effectively processing at scan time. Designing the most efficient process for your unique requirements depending on volumes and index requirements must be evaluated carefully. Contact us to assist you to optimise your processes.

Yes you can. Various finance options are available on all our scanners and can be structured to meet your specific needs.
What is the difference between scanning with a dedicated scanner vs a Multi-Functional Device (MFP)?
Generally, the items on scanning to-do list will determine why you would require a scanner instead of an MFP. If your need to scan multi-page documents or two-sided documents on a regular basis, as most Accounting, Telecom, Banking, Insurance, Audit firms do, a dedicated document scanner is a must. Although it’s easy to find MFPs with automatic document feeders, they usually can’t scan both sides of a page at the same time, or scan as fast as a document scanner.
Other considerations would be:
* If the need is for volume scan output (Anything beyond 100 pages per day) you should consider a scanner which is designed to meet your document scanning demands. MFPs perform much slower in comparison to a dedicated scanner.
Scanners are designed for optimal image production and generally produce best quality images at a smaller file size than MFPs. Which is important consideration in the distribution of electronic documents.
What is the main difference between a sheetfed and a flatbed scanner?
Sheetfed scanners are designed for batch scanning, both sides at the same time with blank page dropout. Flatbed scanners can only scan one document at a time on one side only.
